Reviews are everything on Etsy. They build trust, improve search ranking, and convert browsers into buyers. But most customers don't leave reviews unless you ask. Here's how to ask the right way.

Getting 5-star reviews – set yourself up for success
When to Ask for a Review
Timing matters. Ask too early and they haven't received it yet. Ask too late and they've forgotten about it.
The Sweet Spot
- Physical items: 2-3 days after delivery confirmation
- Digital items: 3-5 days after purchase (gives time to use it)
- Custom orders: After they've confirmed they love it
Check tracking first. Never ask for a review before the item has been delivered. If tracking shows delays, wait until it arrives.

Simple Follow-Up (Most Effective)
Short and sweet works best. Don't write a novel.

Hi [Name],
Just checking in – I hope your [item] arrived safely and you love it!
If you have a moment, I'd really appreciate a review. It helps my small shop more than you know.
Thanks so much for your support!
After Positive Feedback
If they've already messaged you saying they love it, this is the perfect time to ask.
Template
I'm so glad you love it! That totally made my day.
If you have a sec, would you mind leaving a quick review? It really helps other shoppers find my work.
Thanks again for your support!
With a Thank You Note (in package)
Include a card in your shipment – it's more personal than a message.

Hi [Name],
So happy to see you back! I hope you love your latest order as much as your last one.
I noticed you haven't had a chance to leave a review yet – no pressure at all, but if you're enjoying your items, it would mean a lot to me!
Thanks for being such a wonderful customer.
Gentle Reminder (If No Response)
One follow-up is okay. More than that is annoying.
Template
Hi [Name],
Just wanted to make sure your order arrived okay! If there are any issues at all, please let me know – I want to make sure you're happy.
If everything's great, I'd love a quick review when you have a chance. Either way, thanks for supporting my shop!
What NOT to Do
Etsy prohibits:
- Offering incentives for reviews (discounts, gifts, etc.)
- Asking for specifically positive reviews
- Pressuring or guilt-tripping buyers
- Sending excessive follow-up messages
Don't Say This:
- "Leave a 5-star review and get 10% off your next order"
- "Please leave a positive review"
- "My shop depends on 5-star reviews"
- "I'll send you a free gift if you review"
Do Say This:
- "I'd appreciate a review if you have a moment"
- "Reviews help my small business"
- "I'd love to hear your feedback"
- "Let me know if there's anything I can improve"
Set Yourself Up for 5-Star Reviews
The best way to get great reviews is to deliver a great experience.
Before Purchase
- Accurate photos and descriptions
- Clear processing and shipping times
- Answer questions quickly
During Fulfillment
- Ship on time (or early)
- Quality packaging
- Include a personal touch (handwritten note, small extra)
After Delivery
- Follow up to ensure satisfaction
- Resolve any issues immediately
- Make returns/exchanges easy
Fix problems before asking for reviews. If there were any shipping delays or issues with the order, resolve them completely before requesting a review. A happy resolution can still lead to a positive review.
What If They Don't Leave a Review?
Not everyone will leave a review, and that's okay. Here's the reality:
- Only 10-20% of buyers leave reviews on average
- One polite ask is appropriate
- One follow-up (if no response) is the maximum
- After that, let it go
Focus on providing an amazing experience, and reviews will come over time. Pestering customers for reviews will backfire.
